Here's the Skinny on Tailfins.org:

This site is a bit different from what you'll see elsewhere on the web. Almost all of the content is generated by members of the site. It's a place where people united by the car hobby can find info, help and enouragement.

Tailfins started out as a test on some borrowed server space. I've been involved, off and on, with some large corporate web sites and I always had a nagging feeling that none of them were quite right. The Internet was designed to allow information to flow in equal amounts in both directions, but most commercial sites are designed to work like television, assuming most of the information being sent down to viewers who have little to no ability or desire to send any info back.

Tailfins is the opposite. It is designed to be an automotive interest community constructed by its members. The response has been phenonmenal, to the point where the site quickly outgrew the original borrowed space and had to be moved to a commercial server.

Tailfins is a dynamic and vibrant web-based community. If you are a car nut like the rest of us, but don't see anything on your favorite set of wheels, let us know. We're always open to try something new.

Geek Info

This site was originally built with a Macintosh and the best scripting tool in the world-- Frontier by someone who knew what they were doing. The source code on many pages still say so.

Since then, however, it fell back into my hands and is now painstakingly assembled by hand using Allaire HomeSite 3.0.1.

There are vague plans to convert this whole mess to a FileMaker database one of these days. Wish me luck...

2024 note: Ed sent the site over to David Zatz in the hopes that it could be hosted again. It is now hosted courtesy of motales.com with thanks to Ed, Gary, and all the rest. Many changes were made globally using BBEdit’s powerful multifile GREP and updated with Transmit.

2025 note: Instead of staying at a motales subdomain, the site now has its own domain, Tailfins.org (sorry, .com is long gone).
